What Nero Marquina Is

Nero Marquina is a black marble from the Markina region of the Basque Country in northern Spain. Its signature is a fine-grained black ground cut by sharp white calcite veins — a high-contrast look that has defined black marble for generations.

Durability — honest caveats

As a true marble (around 3 Mohs), Nero Marquina is soft and acid-sensitive. Etching on black marble shows as dull grey marks, which can be more visible than on white marble. The white veins can also carry natural fissures. Seal it regularly and keep it away from heavy acid exposure.

That makes it brilliant for bathrooms, fireplaces, feature walls, and furniture, and a careful choice for a working kitchen.

How It Looks

Deep black with crisp white veining — sometimes fine and web-like, sometimes bold and sweeping. Very graphic; it pairs naturally with white marble in checkerboard floors and bold bathrooms.

Finishes

Polished gives the deepest black and highest contrast. Honed softens it but makes etching and water marks show as grey patches, so it suits low-use areas.

Where It Works

Bathroom vanities and walls, fireplace surrounds, feature walls, floors (often paired with white marble), tables, and bar tops with careful use.

Pairings

Gold and brass hardware, white marble, walnut, and crisp white walls. A strong partner for Art Deco and modern-classic interiors.

What Drives the Price

Depth of the black, crispness of the veining, and freedom from fissures drive Nero Marquina pricing. NSC sources it on demand; request current pricing and availability.

Nero Marquina — Common Questions

Is Nero Marquina good for kitchen countertops?

It can be used with care, but it is a soft marble that etches, and etch marks show as grey on black. It is best on vanities, fireplaces, feature walls, and low-acid surfaces.

Does Nero Marquina etch?

Yes — like all marble, acids dull it, and on black marble the etch marks show as grey patches. Seal it and wipe spills quickly.

Where does Nero Marquina come from?

The Markina region of the Basque Country in northern Spain.

What goes with Nero Marquina?

White marble (especially in floors), brass or gold hardware, walnut, and crisp white walls.
